GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL
Whether your child needs to wait in line for school lunch or if they bring a packed lunch, they will have 20ish minutes to eat lunch.
Practice opening easy, spill-proof containers or bags, lunch boxes, etc
- Practice opening juice boxes, as the little holes are small for little hands
- On-the-go pouches are easier for children to open than regular fruit cups
- Don’t be surprised if some leftovers come home, as children tend to talk to their friends more than they eat. Having lunch with friends is a new & fun experience.
- Make sure they know which things get thrown away and which things are supposed to come home.
- Label all boxes, water bottles with full name and phone number.
Make sure your child can use the bathroom unassisted.
- If you can, try to practice in public. Show them how to use the bathroom; stall, urinal, sinks. Independence in this area is a big help to school staff.
- Send a marked water bottle daily for your child.
- Pack a snack from home for your child each day. Cookies, candy, and chips are discouraged
The first six weeks are tough. They will come home tired and hungry. Allow space and snacks! Don't worry if they don't talk about their days. They are still adjusting to you not being there all day with them!
