Character Education

Good character is a critical part of AVA’s educational program. Through character education, our students learn skills that will help them make life-long, responsible, and intelligent choices. When children learn to make good choices, they are more committed to learn and develop habits that make them life-long readers and writers. Our teachers
reinforce character traits within the content of our rich curriculum.

Based on community input and guidance, Aspen View has chosen seven fundamental values that we believe important to creating a foundation for lifelong learning and developing strong community, staff members, and future leaders. The seven fundamental values form the acronym, and eighth character value, R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Aspen View believes R.E.S.P.E.C.T. cohesively joins our fundamental values into an easily remembered and taught character education program.

RESPECT

The character values encompassed by the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program are as follows:

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Showing high regard or an authority, other people, self and country. Treating others as you would want to be treated.

R = Responsibility: Being honest and accountable in word and deed. Having a sense of duty to fulfill tasks with reliability, dependability and commitment.

E = Empathy: We believe children must learn to consider how others feel.

S = Self Control: Develop the ability to think before you act.

P = Perseverance: We strive to develop Aspen View students with the ability to stick with things even when they are hard. This will instill the confidence needed to succeed in whatever endeavor our students undertake

E = Excellence: Striving to do the best in everything you do, while maintaining a positive attitude and a spirit of self-confidence

C = Compassion: Caring in action. Treating others with kindness, generosity and a forgiving spirit.

T = Teamwork: We will create an atmosphere that fosters collaborative and team-focused success to enrich our students and prepare them for high school, college and a collaboration driven marketplace.

Aspen View Academy utilizes the Capturing Kids’ Hearts program to build character. The program begins with the understanding that “you can’t teach their head until you’ve captured their heart”. Goals of the program are to build relationships, grow the group, teach leadership, and prepare kids to reach their potential.

Additionally, school-wide proactive interventions and measures are used to cultivate character. Daily homeroom character lessons, social contract follow-through, whole-school assemblies, and character recognition ceremonies lay the foundation for developing future leaders.
