Meet Ms. Smith

Hello!  🙂

Welcome to 8th grade history class at AVA and to the 2023 - 24 school year! I am really excited to be back and am looking forward to getting to know my students and their families. Here are a few things about me:

I am a native of Colorado; I was born in Wheat Ridge and grew up in Westminster.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver and a Master's degree in Global Affairs: World History and Culture from the University of Denver.

I have been teaching for 18 years and this is my 7th year here at AVA.

I love to read, and some of my favorite genres are YA, romance, sci-fi and fantasy. My favorite book is "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaimon, but he's actually not my favorite author; that would be a tie between Tamora Pierce and J.R. Ward.

If you look around my room, you'll notice several Doctor Who references. Though I love all the doctors, I'm partial to the 10th doctor-Alons-y!

I am a HUGE sports fan, especially college basketball, football, and baseball. My favorite teams are CU football and men's basketball (Go Buffs!!) , Duke men's basketball (Bye Coach K- hello Coach S!), the Bronco's (love em all!! ), and the Rockies (Yeah Chuck Nasty!).

My office hours are on Tuesday afternoons until 4:00 p.m. or by appointment. My contact information is:

[email protected]  (my preferred form of contact)

(720) 733-3436 Ext: 317

I am the co-sponsor of Student Council (along with Miss U) and I sponsor the 8th grade Washington DC/New York trip which travels during the first week of May each year.

Have a great year!

My Classroom Philosophy

A middle school teacher’s job is to provide guidance and support to their students who are learning through the intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects of the growing up process. This holistic approach to teaching lets the students know they are cared for and creates positive conditions for learning through open communication and an environment that is warm, accepting and safe.
