Character education is not new. It was included as an important objective for the first U.S. public schools. As such, Aspen View Academy will deploy a character development plan for both staff and students, modeled around the basic tenets and principles criteria outlined in the Character Education Partnership www.character.org. Based on community input and guidance, Aspen View has chosen seven fundamental values that we believe important to creating a foundation for lifelong learning and developing strong community, staff members, and future leaders. The seven fundamental values form the acronym, and eighth character value, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aspen View believes R.E.S.P.E.C.T. cohesively joins our fundamental values into an easily remembered and taught character education program.
Aspen View Academy utilizes the Capturing Kids’ Hearts program to build character. The program begins with the understanding that “you can’t teach their head until you’ve captured their heart”. Goals of the program are to build relationships, grow the group, teach leadership, and prepare kids to reach their potential.
Additionally, school-wide proactive interventions and measures are used to cultivate character. Daily homeroom character lessons, social contract follow-through, whole-school assemblies, and character recognition ceremonies lay the foundation for developing future leaders.
The character values encompassed by the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program are as follows:
Showing high regard or an authority, other people, self and country. Treating others as you would want to be treated.
R = Responsibility: Being honest and accountable in word and deed. Having a sense of duty to fulfill tasks with reliability, dependability and commitment.
E = Empowerment: We believe children must be equipped with the ability to make good decisions independently of adults. By internalizing the habits and behaviors that demonstrate responsibility, they will be empowered to lead successful, productive lives.
S = Sharing: Developing a willingness to share knowledge, experiences and time to enrich learning, give back to the community through school projects and constantly seek ways to improve through continuous input and feedback
P = Patience: We strive to develop Aspen View students with a level of perseverance and diligence that will instill the confidence needed to succeed in whatever endeavor our students undertake
E = Excellence: Striving to do the best in everything you do, while maintaining a positive attitude and a spirit of self-confidence
C = Compassion: Caring in action. Treating others with kindness, generosity and a forgiving spirit.
T = Teamwork: We will create an atmosphere that fosters collaborative and team-focused success to enrich our students and prepare them for high school, college and a collaboration driven marketplace.
